Biography

Early life

Armstrong was born in Tokyo, Japan to a Scottish father, Hunter Armstrong, and an Italian mother, Sylvia.2 Her mother designs spas for resorts and her father teaches soldiers close combat training.2 Armstrong lived in Japan for several years, before moving to Hawaii and later Sedona, Arizona where she grew up and attended Sedona Red Rock High School. She has also lived in Malaysia and China.3 She attended the University of Arizona for a year to major in costume design and theatre, but dropped out because of the school drama department's policy of barring freshmen from involvement in productions. After her departure from school, she moved to Los Angeles.4

Career

Armstrong's first major break into film was as one of the conjoined twins, the Fratelli sisters, in the parody movie Not Another Teen Movie, as well as the teen movie It's a Boy Girl Thing in which she played hopeless geek Nell. However, she may be best known for her recurring role as Anna Stern in Fox's popular drama The O.C.. She was initially only hired to appear in one episode. However, her popular portrayal of the character led to her return for several more episodes of the series due to the request of fans.

Armstrong also had a recurring role on Freaks and Geeks, and had guest appearances on Judging Amy, Party of Five, C.S.I.: Miami, Numb3rs and the The X-Files. She also had a recurring role on the HBO television series Entourage. Her most recent film projects include Stay Alive, Just My Luck, and Rise.

Her first regular cast role on a television series was in the drama Dirty Sexy Money. However, in March 2008, it was announced that she would not return as a regular to the series in its next season.5

When not acting, Armstrong is often designing clothes for her own clothing brand, called NARU. Her line is currently only available in a few exclusive boutiques in Hawaii. However, she hopes to get other stores across the United States to carry her clothing line.6

She has also appeared in music videos, including Hanson's "Penny and Me" and Daniel Powter's "Bad Day".

Personal life

Armstrong entered an "outpatient facility" due to "personal issues" in October 2007.7 She "decided to enter an outpatient facility to deal with some personal issues in a therapeutic atmosphere and is doing very well," her publicist said in a statement.8 She checked out after six weeks, but returned and stayed for another three months.9
