Early life

Manning was born in Tucson, Arizona to Sharyn and Bill Manning. Her parents divorced in 1981, and her mother worked as a secretary and waitress in order to support Taryn and her older brother, Kellin. When she was 14, her troubled father committed suicide. "My dad was a big drinker and he was cheating," according to Taryn. Her childhood in a trailer park was tough but happy.1 Taryn grew up in Tucson, Arizona, where her mother moved to after her divorce, and later in Los Alamitos, California, where she attended Orange County High School of the Arts.

Career

Acting

Manning began acting in the late 1990s, appearing in small roles in several film and television productions, including episodes of The Practice, Get Real, Boston Public, NYPD Blue and Popular. She also auditioned for the American version of Popstars, which aired in early 2001 on The WB.

Her first role in a major motion picture was in the Kirsten Dunst and Jay Hernandez romantic-comedy crazy/beautiful in which she played the best friend of Dunst's character. crazy/beautiful was followed shortly by a prominent role in the 2002 feature film, Crossroads, where she played one of two best friends of pop star Britney Spears.2 Her subsequent film roles included supporting roles in White Oleander, 8 Mile, A Lot Like Love and the historical epic Cold Mountain.3

In 2005 she appeared in the drama film Hustle & Flow, opposite Terrence Howard, playing a troubled prostitute in Memphis, Tennessee. The film received critical acclaim and was generally considered a success.4 Manning was nominated in Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Awards in category Best Breakthrough Performance for: Hustle & Flow.3 Her next film was Weirdsville, a comedy co-starring Scott Speedman and Wes Bentley.5 Boomkat's song "It's Not My Fault" appeared on the soundtrack of Weirdsville as a duet by Manning and John Rowley. In 2007, she played Ivy Chitty on the short-lived but critically acclaimed Fox television series Drive, which was a drama about various people competing in an illegal cross-country road race.3 In a comedy film After Sex, Manning played the supporting role of Alanna.3

Manning co-starred in romantic-comedyJack and Jill vs. the World opposite actor Freddie Prinze Jr.

In 2002 she sang a rendition of "I'll Take You There" with Tweet in several Gap commercials directed by Peter Lindbergh. In 2003, Manning and her brother Kellin formed the band Boomkat. Their debut album, Boomkatalog. One, was released on March 18, 2003. Boomkat released two singles "The Wreckoning" and "What U Do 2 Me". The first single, "The Wreckoning", hit #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.

In an interview in October 2005's issue of Nylon magazine, Taryn mentioned that Boomkat would be back eventually, and that she is writing songs for the new album once they find another record label. DreamWorks Records was Boomkat's record label from 2002 to 2004.

They dropped us, and it hurt. They didn't like the fact that I was an actress, too.6

After a break from music, Boomkat released their first single in four years, called "Runaway" on April 8, 2008. Despite being the lead single of their second album, "Runaway" failed to reach the heights of their previous singles. In June 2008 Boomkat's second album A Million Trillion Stars became available in online stores. The album was released through an independent record label, Little Vanilla. In the summer of 2008 Boomkat filmed the yet to be released music video for "Run Boy".

In October 2008 Boomkat played several shows throughout the Los Angeles area, hitting spots like North Hollywood's NOHO Scene Festival and venues such as, the Viper Room & Hotel Cafe.

Other career activities

She has a clothing line called Born Uniqorn with best friend Tara Jane. The brand was founded in fall 2005.

Taryn can be seen in the music video for Butch Walker's song "The Weight Of Her", as well as heard on their version of "Christmas All Over Again", originally performed by Tom Petty.

Personal life

Manning had five small tattoos,7 but in 2005, she went through a painful laser treatment to have her tattoos removed. Manning insisted she had "grown out" of her love for skin art and wanted all five of her tattoos lasered off.

In February 2008 Jesse Metcalfe got into a fight with Manning's boyfriend, the rapper Mams Taylor, at Hollywood club "Social". Despite photos documenting the fight, Manning denied it by saying: "It wasn't us".89

Taryn was ranked #60 on 2008's “Hot 100″ list from Maxim magazine.

She was aboard the JetBlue airplane that had to make a three hour surround flight and emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport on September 22, 2005.10 In her own words: "it was the most surreal, out-of-body experience I ever had".11
